Yes, university policy and federal statues require all UW-Madison faculty, staff and students to disclose inventions to WARF, regardless of the monies that funded the research. All Morgridge Institute researchers must also disclose to WARF. Part of this process will include an equity review through the university to review awards and contracts that contributed to the discovery.

WARF’s internal decision committee assess inventions based on many factors, including: We try to make our decisions very quickly because we don’t want patenting to interfere with efforts to publish work. WARF shares the royalty income with the inventors without deducting its significant costs in preparing, filing, and managing patent applications on the invention. No, UW-Madison faculty, staff and students are not obligated to assign their intellectual property to WARF unless required by federal law or the terms of a UW contract with a third party. Depending on the equity review findings (i.e. no federal funding used), it might be up to you whether or not you want to assign IP rights to WARF and work with us on patenting.
